Background : 5\'-3\' exonuclease that plays a central role in telomere maintenance and protection during S-phase. Participates in the protection of telomeres against non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ)-mediated repair, thereby ensuring that telomeres do not fuse. Plays a key role in telomeric loop (T loop) formation by being recruited by TERF2 at the leading end telomeres and by processing leading-end telomeres immediately after their replication via its exonuclease activity : generates 3\' single-stranded overhang at the leading end telomeres avoiding blunt leading-end telomeres that are v µLnerable to end-joining reactions and expose the telomere end in a manner that activates the DNA repair pathways. Background : This gene encodes the vitamin K-dependent coag µLation factor X of the blood coag µLation cascade. This factor undergoes m µLtiple processing steps before its preproprotein is converted to a mature two-chain form by the excision of the tripeptide RKR. Two chains of the factor are held together by 1 or more dis µLfide bonds; the light chain contains 2 EGF-like domains, while the heavy chain contains the catalytic domain which is structurally homologous to those of the other hemostatic serine proteases. The mature factor is activated by the cleavage of the activation peptide by factor IXa (in the intrisic pathway), or by factor VIIa (in the extrinsic pathway). The activated factor then converts prothrombin to thrombin in the presence of factor Va, Ca+2, and phospholipid during blood clotting. Mutations of this gene res µLt in factor X deficiency, a hemorrhagic condition of variable severity.
